"Action Research and Classroom Innovations: How One Grade 3 Teacher Combines Reflective Practice and Innovation with a Class Set of iPads"

The idea for this research initiative stemmed from a teacher requesting more technology for her classroom but having to show this administration that she was achieving her pedagogical goals while integrating “all this technology”. This grade 3 teacher and the head of innovations in teaching and learning at her school designed a comparative study that would show how pedagogical goals are attained with and without technology and expose the added value of integrating the use of iPads in the classroom.
Throughout the study, the teacher documented her reflections and concerns in a shared journal with her colleague and vice versa. She filmed and recorded herself and her students and her colleague frequently visited her class and recorded her observation on a shared Google document. The two of them met regularly to share ideas and findings.
The two of them looked at the process and products of two grade 3 classes: one using a class set of iPads and one class using traditional means to achieve the same project on “Schools of the past” (class B using the iPads) in the fall semester and “Schools of the future” (class A using the iPads) during the winter term.
While it is still early to report on detailed findings from this study, we believe this approach to classroom practice and professional development is highly empowering for the teacher and has immediate impact on classroom instruction and student learning. They also view this presentation as an opportunity to get feedback from colleagues who share the same passion in teaching and learning with technology.
